From Bourboncello To Kale Salad, A Ranking Of The Best Eats & Drinks At Decatur’s Revival

Given that Revival is owned by former “Top Chef” contestant Kevin Gillespie, and has been receiving praise around town, the restaurant has been on my foodie to-do list for a minute. Tucked away in downtown Decatur, Revival is located in a quaint house on Church Street, which comfortably rests a few blocks from the hustle and bustle of Ponce. The Southern eatery is housed in what appears to be a converted home, creating an exterior that adds even more to the “dinner at grandma’s” feel of the restaurant.

During my visit to Revival, I sampled a great deal off the menu (thanks in part to their family style option), and opted to create a list of my personal favorites. So, here goes…

Bourboncello – I’ve never been much of a digestif person, but one sip of the bourboncello at Revival and that has swiftly changed. The bourboncello is made in house and features bourbon, orange oleo saccharum, and orange juice. The bourbon definitely packs some heat, but the orange helps in making the bourboncello an invitingly mellow sip.

Sweet Potato Dumplings – Since Revival is known for its Southern cuisine, the menu is understandably pretty heavy. There’s catfish, fried chicken, mac ‘n cheese, etc. I was in the mood for a meatless entree, so I opted for the sweet potato dumplings. A wise choice. The dumplings are a lighter choice on the entree menu, but are still on the hearty side thanks to the dumplings, which are made from sweet potato and mascarpone cheese. Mushrooms and greens tossed in a creamy sauce also accompanies the dish. The sweet potato dumplings are subtly sweet and serve as a nice companion to the savory greens. Only complaint is I wish there were more mushrooms. I counted maybe three or four. I’m a new fan of mushrooms, so you’ll have to excuse me.

Cocktails On The Cheap: $12 Bottomless Sangria At Decatur’s Calle Latina

calle-latina-sangria-1

From noon to 5 P.M. on Saturdays, heaven resides inside of Calle Latina, thanks to the Decatur restaurant’s bottomless sangria. For only $12 per person, you get to indulge in their homemade sangria while you nosh on empanadas, ceviche, and other Latin-inspired bites.

I’m a big fan of the empanadas at Calle Latina, so I’ve visited the restaurant quite a few times, but I finally had the chance to check out their bottomless sangria a few weeks ago. Let’s just say, I’m already plotting my return. The sangria is tasty, and the waiters don’t hesitate in giving you fresh carafes of sangria for you and your homies when you start getting low.

In addition to their bottomless sangria on Saturdays, Calle Latina also offers bottomless mimosas on Sundays, and a variety of other boozy specials throughout the week.

You can find Calle Latina at 406 Church Street (right outside of Decatur Station).

Cocktails On The Cheap: $5 Pina Coladas & Punch Of The Day At Decatur’s The SOS Tiki Bar

The SOS Tiki Bar Pina Colada

It’s not often that you stumble upon a tiki bar while walking through a dimly lit alley in downtown Decatur. Okay, maybe said alley wasn’t that dimly lit, and I was familiar with The SOS Tiki Bar long before stumbling upon it, but you get the idea.

Pina coladas, daiquiris, and other tropics-inspired concoctions are high on my list of favorite cocktails, so I wanted to visit The SOS Tiki Bar as soon as I received word that the bar would be replacing Paper Plane.

Also, they have a daily Happy Hour special, which features various punches, so my enthusiasm was heightened even more. I assumed their Happy Hour punches would feature solely rum, but the punch of the day when I stopped by featured cognac as the main spirit. It was the “Beach Cobbler,” and was made using cognac, sherry, raspberry, lemon, sugar, and soda. I can’t say I was a fan. It wasn’t bad, just not my speed.

I did enjoy their pina colada, which was only $5. FIVE FRIGGIN’ DOLLARS. In case you’re wondering, I felt the need to repeat that price because A) $5 for a real pina colada is pretty insane, and B) The pina coladas at The SOS Tiki Bar were initially $10, but were brought down to $5 back in December. Let’s all go ahead and embrace that win for a moment.

With its $5 pina coladas, rotating Happy Hour, and retro, tiki bar vibe, I’m very much looking forward to my next visit to The SOS Tiki Bar.

Cocktails On The Cheap: Half Price Whiskey Cocktails On Wednesdays At Decatur’s The Pinewood

The PinewoodThings harder than finding half price specials on craft cocktails: locating a leprechaun and his pot of gold, beating Level 482 on Candy Crush, taking a selfie with Beyonce…You get the point. Needless to say, finding cheap craft cocktails is no easy feat. That’s why I’m a big fan of Whiskey Wednesdays at downtown Decatur eatery, The Pinewood Tippling Room.

Every Wednesday, the restaurant offers their whiskey cocktails, which are normally $10 to $12-ish, at half price. Sometimes this offer does change a bit. They might only feature select whiskeys, but despite any minor stipulations, the cocktails are always half off. And we’re talking about some darn good cocktails too, folks. I can’t speak on the food too much since I haven’t sampled a lot, but the cocktails at The Pinewood are definitely on point.

Be sure to check them out one of these Hump Days!
