We’ve all heard of foods and dishes that contain sexually stimulating properties, but did you know that cocktails can also work as aphrodisiacs?
Drinking a cocktail may seem counter-intuitive for arousal given that alcohol is a depressant, and there are a plethora of beverages–ones typically used to make alcoholic drinks–that also suppress your libido, such as soda, according to YourTango.com. But mixologists have found a way to combine common sexually boosting ingredients into delicious, and some rather out-of-the ordinary cocktails. And despite science pretty much proving that alcohol inhibits performance in the bedroom, a study conducted by Adameve.com showed that 79 percent of the participants actually enjoy sex when they drink beforehand.
Without further ado, here are some of the sexy concoctions that you should sample with your partner:
Chai-Infused Sweet Vermouth
In Eastern medicine, ginger is widely known as a libido booster that can literally heat you up. Like ginger, cinnamon also has both medicinal and sensual powers. Together with cloves, black tea, and cardamom, they make the flavor profile of chai, which will be used to elevate the taste of the sweet vermouth. Expert mixologist Dushan Zaric explains that, “The resulting flavor is so sexy that you will feel like you have been kissed by a beautiful belly dancer,” and is a key ingredient for one of his other stimulating cocktails called the Matahari.
1 in-long piece of ginger, coarsely chopped
8 green cardamom pods
1 cinnamon stick
2 tbsp chai
2 L Cinzano sweet vermouth
Heat the first four ingredients in a pan. Add the tea and then 2 cups of vermouth to begin with, and then boil for 2 minutes. Remove the pot from the heat and after letting it cool completely, mix the rest of the vermouth in. Strain the mixture through a cheesecloth, then pour it into a bottle and store at room temperature.
Now that you know how to make chai-infused sweet vermouth, you are ready to mix Zaric’s other cocktail. In addition to the chai element, this beverage has incorporated pomegranate juice.
In Greek mythology, Aphrodite is claimed to have planted the first pomegranate tree, and the bountiful seeds in the fruits are often associated with fertility. Also, research from Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh reveal that the juice increased testosterone levels in men and women, leading to increased sexual desire and heightened mood.
1 oz chai-infused sweet vermouth
1 ¼ oz Pierre Ferrand Amber Cognac
¾ oz pomegranate juice
¾ oz freshly squeezed lemon juice
3 dried organic rose buds, for garnish
Shake the first four ingredients with ice in a mixing glass, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Top off the drink with the rose buds.
Quail Egg Shooters
Raw quail eggs are another famous aphrodisiac that have been cleverly used in an alcoholic drink, specifically a shooter. Other than increasing desire, WonderHowTo.com say that the egg also acts as a preventative agent for erectile dysfunction.
Fresh quail eggs
Sesame seeds, for garnish
Scallions, for garnish
Pour an inch of sake into your shot glasses, then layer ¼ inch of ponzu on top followed by a few drops of hot sauce. Carefully crack a quail egg over each shot glass and top with 1 tsp of fish roe. Add one drop of sesame oil to each shot. Finish the shots with scallions and sesame seeds.
