I really hate to choose favorites when it comes to this here blog, but I will say that rum ranks very high when it comes to my favorite spirits. It might just be the ideal spirit in my opinion, it doesn’t assault your mouth too much when sipped straight and I’m sure we all know rum is amazing when it comes to making cocktails. So all my fellow rum lovers out there will be pleased to hear that August 16th is in fact National Rum Day! Hooray!!
My goal is to always post drink recipes that I think are really cool and that others would enjoy, but I have to admit that these recipes have me quite literally salivating over here. The “Cruzan Coconut Old Fashioned” had me at “old fashioned,” the house-made cream of coconut for Sailor Jerry Rum’s “Wahine Piña Colada” will certainly be out of this world, and as simple as it might be the “Captain Morgan Black & Honey” sounds absolutely delicious. So take your pick and Happy National Rum Day!
Cruzan Coconut Old Fashioned (Pictured Above)
2 Parts Cruzan® Single Barrel Rum
1/2 Part Rich Simple Syrup
3 Dashes Of Bitters
Coconut Water Ice Cubes (see additional recipe below)
Cut a wide swath of orange peel and lightly press it in the bottom of a rocks glass. Add rum, syrup and bitters. Now drop in a few Coconut Water Ice Cubes and stir gently.
Coconut Water Ice Cubes Recipe: Pour a can of Coconut Water (strain the pulp out first, if needed) in an ice cube tray – the bigger the cube the better – and freeze for several hours.
1.25 oz. Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum
.75 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice
.5 oz. Honey
1 Lemon Wedge
Combine liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake until cold. Strain into a rocks glass and garnish with a lemon wedge.
Wahine Piña Colada
1.5 oz. Fresh Pineapple Juice
1.5 oz. House-Made Cream Of Coconut*
1.5 oz. Sailor Jerry Rum
Combine all ingredients in a shaker, add ice, and shake.
*House-made cream of coconut: Combine two cans of Coco Lopez with 1 can of coconut milk, and 2 oz. fresh lime juice.
